In 2004, Brett earned his Bachelor of Arts degree (Honours) in Political Studies/Philosophy from Queen’s University.
In 2007, he graduated from Dalhousie Law School in Halifax. While at Dalhousie he successfully represented students charged with disciplinary and academic offences.
During law school Brett also worked with a large national law firm, where he assisted in defending regulatory offences and allegations of professional misconduct against doctors.
Since his call to the Bar of Ontario in 2008, Brett has practiced criminal defence law, working primarily as a sole practitioner. Brett has also worked for a leading Ottawa law firm in the areas of criminal defence and personal injury law.
Brett is committed to maintaining his up-to-date legal knowledge and skills. He regularly attends seminars designed to enhance his litigation skills and knowledge. He is involved in organizing educational events for the legal profession. Brett has also spoken at conferences for lawyers and judges on various topics.

Brett recently served two terms as a trustee on the board of the County of Carleton Law Association (CCLA), an association of Ottawa lawyers from all practice areas. He remains involved with a number of CCLA committees, including the Criminal Law Conference planning committee. Outside of the law, Brett has been involved in coaching minor hockey for a number of years.

Unique Ottawa Criminal Lawyer Perspective
Brett McGarry articled for the judges of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 2007. While clerking he provided legal research concerning trials for offences such as murder, manslaughter, fraud, and sexual assault. This unique exposure to serious criminal cases provided Brett with insight into the decision making process in trials, which contributes to his successful results today. The experience also taught him the importance of meticulously preparing legal arguments and presenting facts in a compelling manner.
